On July 9, 2022, I took a piece of cardboard from a pile on a street in Ponte da Barca, Portugal and put down conversations with people that I just met from a residency, where I had to introduce myself and explain what (kind of art) I do. I wore the cardboard around my neck and sat. I put the cardboard back to the pile when I had to leave the next day.

MANIFESTO OF AN ARTIST WHO IS ACTUALLY AN ARTIST???
-What do you do? -I walk. And think. And sigh. And walk. And sing. And walk. And die. -What’s your medium? -Myself. And other people. And the entire world. -Why do you make work? -To deal with the time before death. To justify my existence in the world. -What makes art art? -Earnestness. Instinct. Urgency. No Purpose. -Where is your studio? -In my brain. Or somewhere in the drains? -Where do you get materials? -Trash from the street or from other people. -What are you good at? -Observing. Making connections. Guessing. Interpreting. -What are you bad at? -Making decisions. Being patient. -What do you hate? -Academic art. Art for the sake of political correctness. Bureaucracy. -How do you make money as an artist? -???????????? -What are some obstacles in your art making? -Representing my work with images. And telling people it’s art. -What are some worries? -Not being able to settle down. But that’s good. -What do you enjoy about art? -I admire people’s encounter with the world and their ability to express/record/represent? through art. -What do you enjoy about art making? -Being able to be free. -What do you dislike about your art? -Being personal, unrelated and valueless to the rest of the world. |
